Gavin & Stacey star and co-creator Ruth Jones has put a dampener on claims that the series will make its return to screens.

The beloved BBC sitcom returned for a Christmas special in 2019 following a nine-year hiatus, and it had been  suggested that more episodes were on their way.

However, appearing on This Morning, Jones denied the claims, telling Ruth Langsford and Eamonn Holmes that there were no plans for future episodes.

“There aren't any plans to write anything,” she said. "Obviously James [Corden] is in America and I'm in Wales. I’m sorry not to be able to give you any good news.

“The joy of our last special is that it ended in such a way that if we never go back to Barry, we'll always wonder what happened next. So there’s something quite juicy about that.”

Earlier this week, the BBC’s Charlotte Moore said that a Gavin & Stacey follow-up was set to arrive “one day”, although she specified that “that wasn’t something that was going to happen this year”.

Corden co-created the series with Jones, and starred in it as Smithy alongside Jones, Mathew Horne and Joanna Page.

Since the final episode of the original series’ run, Corden has gone on to find considerable success in the US, and currently hosts his own late-night talk show.

Fans reacted with dismay to Jones’ revelation about the series’ future, with many expressing their disappointment on social media.

“Ruth Jones just said there's no plans for new Gavin & Stacey. Really playing with my heart here man,” one wrote.
