Author George RR Martin is busy working on a new sci-fi series for HBO.
The show, tentatively titled Captain Cosmos, will reportedly focus on a young science fiction TV writer in 1949. The as-yet-unnamed character will pen novels that no one “would dare to write” at the time, according to The Hollywood reporter.
The late 1940s is right at the start of the TV era and after the end of the first golden age of science fiction, when the genre was languishing in the doldrums having fallen out of public favour with the narrowing of the pulp sci-fi market.
Captain Cosmos is in the early stages of development and a pilot episode is being written by Michael Cassutt, the man behind SyFy's Z Nation.
Martin is already an established TV writer with credits for The Twilight Zone and The Outer Limits, along with penning the scripts for several episodes of Game of Thrones.
For readers worried how much of an impact the new series will have on Martin’s A Song of Ice and Fire writing commitments, Captain Cosmos is not expected to take up large amounts of his time.
Martin already announced that he is scaling back his public appearances – including this year’s San Diego Comic Con – so that he can concentrate on completing the sixth instalment of the series.
He has said that he is determined to finish his new book Winds of Winter by next year and released an excerpt from it earlier this week.
Season five of Game of Thrones will be back on our screens next week and is based on Martin’s fifth novel A Dance with Dragons.
