The President of the United States posted an image of himself with the words "Game Over" written over the top. The main font used in the image is directly lifted from the HBO fantasy show.
A spokesperson for the US network said: “Though we can understand the enthusiasm for Game of Thrones now that the final season has arrived, we still prefer our intellectual property not be used for political purposes.”
HBO has previously responded to Trump using Game of Thrones to promote his policies. The president infamously used the phrase "Sanctions are coming" on a poster: a reference to the show's phrase "Winter is coming".
They posted on Twitter at the time: “How do you say trademark misuse in Dothraki?”
Some Game of Thrones viewers were unhappy to see the show’s imagery being used by Trump, with one person writing on Twitter: “Don’t f*****g disrespect Game of Thrones“.
“I am offended you are tarnishing the image of Game of Thrones,” someone else wrote in part.
Another person tweeted: “If there’s one thing I learned from watching Game of Thrones, it’s that you shouldn’t turn your back and assume the game is over until the end credits roll.”
Someone else compared Mr Trump to Game of Thrones‘s arrogant King Joffrey Baratheon, while another person lamented: “He’s trying to ruin Game of Thrones.“
The president tweeted or retweeted 12 times on Thursday morning about the investigation, proclaiming his innocence and claiming that the probe was politically motivated.
Mueller investigated multiple instances of Trump attempting to curtail the special counsel probe as part of determining whether the president committed obstruction of justice.
