At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.
Your support makes all the difference. In light of the major hack and the immense interest in the Game of Thrones scripts and plot summaries it uncovered, HBO is taking no chances with spoilerific documents pertaining to the final season.
The show has gone digital-only with regards to its scripts for the past few seasons so as to avoid a physical copy being left out in the open, but with s8 it is taking things one step further.
"I got six of [the scripts], I've got them all," Ser Davos Seaworth actor Liam Cunningham told IGN, "[but] I can't open them because of all the security and I can't walk [them] out."
The actor appears to be suggesting that the scripts can now only be viewed in a secure location - presumably in the show's Belfast studios.
He didn't clarify how this restriction will be loosened once filming begins and the cast and crew need to refer to the scripts on set, but he did note that he's quite happy not to have read the scripts for now as it's "like pulling the pin out of a grenade."
This all might sound a bit extreme, but Game of Thrones is a multi-million dollar vehicle and HBO are apt to want to do everything they can to stop the show's final season from being spoiled, as the penultimate one was to an extent.
Game of Thrones season 8 has yet to be given a release date, but new production details suggest it won't be until 2019.
