Game of Thrones season 7: Set location hints at big things to come

A huge Daenerys story arc is in the works

Season six of Game of Thrones finished with Daenerys Targaryen, Tyrion Lannister, and a host of allies bearing down upon Westeros, their touchdown in the Seven Kingdoms imminent.

Fans of the HBO show have been questioning where the fleet will land; perhaps they will head to Dorne? Take the North first? Or, in what would be a chaotic move, will they head straight for King’s Landing, now governed by Cersei?

Whilst it would be understandable that the showrunners would want to tease Danny and Cersei facing off for as long as possible, a new report has indicated big things are about to happen in the capital.

According to Watchers on the Wall, a production source confirmed the ancient Dragonpit ruins, located in King’s Landing, will debut on-screen in season seven.

Whilst yet to be mentioned in the TV show, the Dragonpit is discussed multiple times throughout George RR Martin’s writings; In A Game of Thrones, Catelyn Stark marvels at it from afar, its broken dome sitting atop Rhaenys's Hill. Later, in A Clash of Kings, a group fall through the floor, finding a hidden stash of Wildfire.

The Dragonpit's history dates back to long before the books’ events, though. Prior to being a massive dome used to hold the Targaryens’ dragons, there was a Sept sat atop the hill; this quickly fell into the hands of the Faith Militant during an uprising led by Maegor the Cruel and his dragon, Balerion the Black Dread.

It was Maegor who demanded the dome be built, yet many of King’s Landings people refused to do so after the infamous leader killed hundreds to keep the Red Keep’s secrets, instead fleeing for their lives.

Later on, during the Dance of the Dragons - a war between the Targaryens over who will take the thrown which saw a woman sit upon the Iron Throne for the first time - a one-armed shepherd led disgruntled townsfolk to the dome, leading to the death of five dragons and thousands of people. The Dragonpit was burnt down following the uprising.

So, what does this have to do with the future of Westeros? Well, Martin has often mirrored past events with the present. Last season, we saw a Faith Militant group take over King’s Landing then fall by fire, a demented woman sits upon the Iron Throne, and dragons are heading to Westeros.

Furthermore, a one-armed man with leadership capabilities - Jaime Lannister - would be willing to fight those dragons for the one he loves; could we be about to see history repeat as Jaime takes on Daenerys at the Dragonpit?

Obviously, we’re talking possibilities here and Jaime may not go insane and lead a pack of warriors head first into Danny’s three dragons, but it is still a possibility. However, we have no doubts if the Dragonpit makes an appearance, it will be key to the story's progression.
