Game of Thrones season 7 episode 5 'Eastwatch' may have just subtly confirmed huge Tyrion Lannister theory

It's may not just be Jon Snow whose parentage bears huge surprises

The latest episode of Game of Thrones season 7 was filled to the brim with plot developments that at once propelled the plot onwards while subtly addressing theories related to huge revelations to come (here's looking at you, Gilly).

One such theory that seems to have been confirmed relates to the heritage of one Tyrion Lannister (Peter Dinklage).

The scene in question didn't even feature Tyrion. Instead, it was the one in which Daenerys (Emilia Clarke) watches on in shock as her fire-breather Drogon - fresh from incinerating the Tarlys - allows Jon Snow (Kit Harington) to delicately stroke him, something CinemaBlend reports that she's never since her "children" have grown to full size.

Of course, fans aren't too shocked with the development considering they know Jon will soon be revealed as the secret son of Rhaegar Targaryen.

This may be the first time Dany has seen her dragons respond in this way to a stranger, but that's not the case for the audience - the moment perhaps inadvertently addresses the long-standing theory that Tyrion Lannister is, in fact, not a Lannister but a Targaryen destined to ride the third of Dany's dragons as predicted in the prophecy from George R.R. Martin's book series.

Cast your minds back to season 6 when Dany and Drogon had flown away from Meereen leaving behind Rhaegal and Viserion chained underground angry and refusing to eat. Tyrion, clearly terrified, can be seen unchaining them, feeding them and - wait for it - stroking them.

The book theory is based on the reveal that the Mad King Aerys took a shine to Tyrion's mother Joanna Lannister when she was at King's Landing during Tyrion's presumed father Tywin's tenure as Hand of the King. Fans believe that Aerys may have forced himself onto Joanna who later died in childbirth - something that may have fuelled the treacherous Tywin's hatred of his son even further.

If this does turn out to be the case, it might shut up all those characters who clearly judge Tyrion for killing his father.

Another rather more absurd theory doing the rounds argues that Bran, in attempting to prevent the White Walkers from ever being created, becomes the Night King.

The latest Thrones episode - titled 'Eastwatch' - was yet another fast-paced outing (read our review here) which saw the stage set for what could well be the HBO show's biggest scene so far and the long-awaited return of a fan favourite.

Game of Thrones airs in the US on HBO every Sunday where it is simulcast in the UK on Sky Atlantic at 2am. It is repeated that same evening on both Sky Atlantic and NOW TV.
