Before season six of Game of Thrones hit the airwaves, if a character died on the show, they were almost guaranteed to not be coming back.

However, since this season began, we’ve already seen the return of Jon Snow, Benjen Stark, and The Hound, all of whom were presumed dead for numerous episodes.

With death no longer a finality, could we be seeing more characters return to the show? Let’s evaluate who could be back, and the chances of them really returning.

Stannis - 1/10

Having lost most of his men thanks to Ramsey Bolton’s midnight run, Stannis’s army was defeated attempting to take back Winterfell. The king eventually fled, with Brienne seemingly killing him - we just never see her actually strike him.

Is he coming back? This one is very unlikely; already this season, Brienne told The Onion Knight that she killed him. Could she be lying? Probably not. But the dream of Stannis the Mannis lives on with some.

Jojen Reed - 2/10

After travelling for two seasons with Bran, Jojen was quite unceremoniously killed when ambushed by White Walkers. Despite their best efforts, the Children of the Forest were unable to save him, instead blowing his body up to stop him coming back as a reanimated corpse.

Is he coming back? Definitely not as a White Walker or in his human form again. However, there is the possibility Jojen Warged into an animal in order to survive. How we would ever know this, who can say, so the chances are he will not be appearing anytime soon.

Lady Stoneheart/Catelyn Stark - 3/10

Ever since Lady Catelyn was unceremoniously killed off in The Red Wedding, fans have been hoping she would be back. In the novels, Catelyn returns as Lady Stoneheart, having been reanimated by Lord Beric Dondarrion, ex-leader of the Brotherhood Without Banners.

Is she coming back? Possibly. With the re-introduction of Lemoncloak, a member of the Brotherhood, there’s the possibility Stoneheart has taken over as their leader. Actor Jóhannes Haukur has also teased her introduction, Tweeting out our previous story on how she may return.

Syrio - 4/10

Syrio has been a fan favourite since his appearance in the first season of the show. Having trained Arya, Syrio seemingly gives his life protecting the young Stark. It is widely believed he died during his fight with Meryn Trants - the man Arya killed last season, leading to her becoming blind.

Is he coming back? Fingers crossed the First Sword of Bravos managed to at least flee Trants, or survive in some way. Thanks to a still of episode eight, fans really do believe he will be back, plus the actor even Tweeted about possibly returning - in a very cryptic manner.

Drogo - 5/10

Dying from an infected cut, thanks to Mirri Maz Duur’s with witchcraft, Drogo is eventually burnt pyre: Daenerys walks onto the pyre and her dragons’ eggs hatch, much to the Dothraki’s amazement.

Is he coming back? In a way, probably. Drogo already returned in Daenerys’s season two vision - which kind of counts as him being back, right? Chances are, the Mother of Dragons could very well have another vision, leading to one last Drogo feature.

Hodor - 7/10

‘Hold the Door’…

Is he coming back? Despite being ripped apart by Walkers, there is quite a big possibility he will be back, just not as the lovable Hodor we know. The likelihood is, Hodor is now a White Walker, hunting down the living with the rest of the pack. At least we’ll get to see Hodor again, right?

Ned Stark - 10/10

WHAT! I can hear you from here. Ned’s not really coming back is he? We saw his head chopped off in season one, plus if Sean Bean was on set the world would know by now.

Is he coming back? Hell yes, he is. Just, not Sean Bean’s Ned. If that was the question it would be a definite no. Fortunately, we’re almost guaranteed to see a young Ned Stark again, played by Robert Aramayo, in another flashback - likely confirming R+L=J.

So, there are just a few names that we could be seeing in the near future on Game of Thrones. Meanwhile, now The Hound is back, fans are getting very, very excited about Cleganebowl - which you can read about here.
