From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Weird Melisandre happenings aside, one of the biggest moments in episode 1 of Game of Thrones season 6 was Sansa’s escape from Winterfell and reunion with powerful ally Brienne of Tarth.

Joined by an apparently reformed Theon, the question is now what will the trio get up to?

Revenge of course, and the Boltons will surely be first.

In a post-first episode broadcast interview, actor Sophie Turner told the New York Times of Brienne:

“It felt like the first time since maybe Tyrion that someone has really been on her side and rooting for her — Littlefinger had questionable morals. So it was a really big deal for them to just swear to be good to each other, and for the first time Sansa believes it. She knows she has the power to start gathering people to help her on her journey.”

She added of what’s next for Sansa now she’s escaped the cruel Ramsay Bolton:

“It’s about her going to people and trying to get them to listen to her, and showing them that she’s not just a stupid young girl anymore. She’s been through it all and she’s come out the other side with vast amounts of knowledge. She knows how to manipulate and she knows the politics - she’s had a front seat for this kind of thing from the moment she was a prisoner for the Lannisters. She’s watched Cersei and Margaery and Littlefinger and Tyrion, and she’s learned from all of them. Now she knows how to play the game.”

This ties in with comments Turner made ahead of the premiere, when she claimed that the normally weak/naive Sansa turns into a “boss ass bitch” in the new season.

She further elaborated to IGN:

“Her motivation going forward is revenge on all the people that have done her wrong. […] The fact that she has someone behind her now foreshadows the fact that she’s going to start building a group of people who really listen to her for the first time. It’s important that the first one of them is a woman, and that’s her only gateway into making the men listen to her. It definitely foreshadows good things for her.”

“They’re kind of like a duo who are quite powerful in their own right because Brienne has these amazing set of skills and also is such a strong woman and really inspires Sansa to be that person, to stand up in front of her enemies. Sansa knows how to play the game.”

This is exciting stuff, and could be the beginning of the Starks’ resurgence in Westeros, potentially eventually taking back Winterfell. If those leaked set photos are anything to go by, she’ll hopefully be joined by her older brother in a battle against the Boltons.
