Your support helps us to tell the story

From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Your support makes all the difference.

You see that picture above? That’s two versions of The Simpsons recreating The Beatles’ classic Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band album cover.

Why am I pointing this out to you? Because the one on the left is from the coach gag at the bginning of season eight, episode 14, The Itchy & Scratchy & Poochie Show.

The one on the right is from season 27’s premier Every Man's Dream. It’s almost an exact copy, likely reusing old frames from the original sketch.

Why does this matter? Because it is just further proof The Simpson’s really, really need to call it a day.

According to reports, Smithers is going to come out as gay at some stage in season 27: you can read this piece on why that is lazy writing.

This - re-using old old frames and gags - yet further exemplifies how lazy the writers really have become. Luckily, the show is set to end within the next three months, probably for the best.
