Your support helps us to tell the story

From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Your support makes all the difference.

With the number of TV shows being cancelled seemingly growing by the minute, many avid screen junkies were left shocked when Syfy announced that The Expanse has been cancelled.

The science-fiction space exploration series has garnered impressive reviews, the third season achieving a 100 percent score on the review aggregate website Rotten Tomatoes, one reviewer saying the show is ”to this decade what Battlestar Galactica was to the previous one.”

Like how the Internet rallied around Brooklyn Nine-Nine hoping to get the series picked up by another network (which miraculously happened almost instantly), people are calling on other networks to pick up The Expanse.

One petition urging Amazon to pick up the series, started up following the news, has already gained 107,000 signatures as of writing. Other are hoping fellow streaming service Netflix – which hosts the show in many territories, including the UK – picks up the series.

The hashtag #SaveTheExpanse has also been doing the rounds, plus famous faces have implored someone to take on the series, including Will Wheaton, Game of Thrones author George RR Martin, Patton Oswalt, and the astronaut Andreas Mogensen.

Perhaps a network/streaming service will be persuaded by some recent ratings news: the first episode to air following the cancellation managed 609,000 live viewers, one of only two episodes in the last two years to hit above 600,000 viewers.

Streaming figures have not been revealed, but with Amazon showing The Expanse in the United States, they should have a clear picture of whether there's a big enough audience to justify bring the show back. The Expanse continues to air on Syfy in the US every Wednesday and is available to stream in the UK on Netflix.
