The 2020 Emmys will reportedly be held virtually as the coronavirus pandemic continues to complicate gatherings.

According to Variety, a letter was sent by the Emmys’ executive producers shortly after the nominations were announced on Tuesday.

In the letter, the executive producers, including host Jimmy Kimmel, inform key nominees that this year’s event will be virtual, the website wrote.

“As you’ve probably guessed, we’re not going to be asking you to come to the Microsoft Theatre in downtown LA on 20 September,” the missive states in part.

“This year, it’s still going to be TV industry’s biggest night out … but we’ll come to you!”

The Independent has contacted the Television Academy, which oversees the ceremony, for more information.

According to Variety, the letter tells nominees a “top notch team of technicians, producers and writers” has been assembled ahead of the event to film them at their home or at a location of their choice.

“We’re going to make you look fabulous – we’re exploring the cutting edge of technology to allow us to use good cameras and lighting and look forward to working with you to produce your unique ‘on screen’ moments,” the letter adds.

Nominations for the 72nd Emmy Awards were announced on 28 July.
