Emmy nominations 2018 live: Game of Thrones leads the pack with 22 nominations while The Handmaid's Tale dominates acting categories
It;s been a good day for Atlanta, Barry, The Crown, Godless, Killing Eve, Stranger Things and Westworld
The nominations for the 70th Primetime Emmy Awards have been announced in Los Angeles today.
The Handmaid's Tale actor Samira Wiley and The Blacklist actor Ryan Eggold revealed the shows, casts and crews that will are vying for awards, as chosen by the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences, at the ceremony taking place on 17 September at the Microsoft Theater in Downtown LA and broadcast by NBC.
As predicted, Game of Thrones - who returned to the fold having been ineligible last year - leads the pack with a grand total of 22 nominations including Best Drama as well as the acting categories (Nikolaj Coster-Waldau, Peter Dinklage and Diana Rigg have all been recognised). Still, the runaway success in terms of the acting department is far and away The Handmaid's Tale which is looking to capitalise on its big win last year.
Elisabeth Moss faces the likes of Claire Foy (The Crown), Keri Russell (The Americans) and Killing Eve's Sandra Oh who becomes the first Asian woman to ever be nominated in the lead actress category while co-stars turn competitors in the categories of Supporting Actress and Outstanding Guest Actress (the former sees nominations for Alexis Biedel, Yvonne Strahovski and reigning champion Ann Dowd).
In the comedy stakes, it's nominations a-plenty for the second season of Donald Glover's Atlanta, Netflix smash GLOW and Amazon's Golden Globe-winning The Marvellous Mrs Maisel which sees Rachel Brosnahan go up against Pamela Adlon (Better Things), Allison Janney (Mom) and Issa Rae of Insecure fame.
Twin Peaks fans won't be happy when they see the Limited Series nominations. Considering it was eligible this year as it aired the majority of its episodes after the Emmys cut-off point in 2017, it's fair to say David Lynch's revival has been snubbed (shout out to Larry David whose long-waited Curb Your Enthusiasm return got noticed in the Comedy categories).
Still, it's good news for The Assassination of Gianni Versace, Godless and Patrick Melrose who'll all duke it out while Laura Dern may as well collect her trophy now for The Tale.
