Emmys 2017: Why Game of Thrones and Twin Peaks aren't nominated for awards

Arguably the two most discussed shows of the year

Tonight sees television's answer to the Oscars - the Emmys - take place hopefully crowning (what some consider) the best television shows currently on the year with shows Better Call Saul, Stranger Things and Westworld all up for the top prize.

Some people tuning in may be surprised to see zero mention of two of the year's biggest shows - in terms of talking points anyway: HBO series Game of Thrones and David Lynch's Twin Peaks revival which both drew to a close in the past few weeks.

Don't worry - there's a reason behind this 'omission.' In fact, it's no omission at all. Reigning Best Drama champ Game of Thrones failed to make the cut merely due to the fact its latest season didn't air during the Emmys' eligibility period (1 June 2016-31 May 2017).

Now, although Twin Peaks' four first episodes aired before the eligibility cutoff period, it'll have to wait until next year for those inevitable Limited Series nominations considering the majority of its 18 episodes aired during 2018's eligibility period (1 June 2017-31 May 2018).
