The final night of the Creative Arts Emmys took place on Saturday (19 September), after five days of virtual events hosted by Nicole Byer.
The mishap came during the award for Outstanding Guest Actor in a Drama Series, which was awarded to Ron Cephas Jones for his role in This Is Us.
However, while Cephas Jones’s name appeared on the screen, the voiceover declared that Bateman was the winner for his guest appearance on The Outsider.
The contradictory messages prompted confusion from viewers, with one tweeting: “Was it Jason Bateman? Or Ron Cephas Jones?”
“Creative Arts Emmy technical glitch: Screen says Ron Cephas Jones wins for drama guest actor, voiceover says Jason Bateman. Whoops,” another wrote.
After an advert break, the mistake was rectified as a message appeared on the screen reading: “Our apologies, an incorrect winner has been announced. We're fixing it now. Please don’t go away.”
Cephas Jones previously won for This Is Us in 2018, but this year’s win is historic for a special reason. Earlier this week, his daughter, Hamilton star Jasmine, won an acting award at the Emmys for her performance on Quibi’s #FreeRayshawn.
This makes them the first father-daughter duo to win in the same year in Emmy history.
Speaking about their wins, Ron Cephas Jones said: “As a parent that’s the most fulfilling that I could ever feel at the moment. Winning another Emmy is the icing on the cake, but to see my daughter progress and move into this place where she’s earned an Emmy is beyond words and I tear up every time I think about it.”
