Your support helps us to tell the story

From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Your support makes all the difference.

The Umbrella Academy and Juno star Elliot Page has come out as transgender.

Page made the announcement on Tuesday on social media, writing: “I want to share with you that I am trans, my pronouns are he/they and my name is Elliot.”

The 33-year-old actor added: “I feel lucky to be writing this. To be here. To have arrived at this place in my life. I feel overwhelming gratitude for the incredible people who have supported me along this journey.”

He continued, “I can’t begin to express how remarkable it feels to finally love who I am enough to pursue my authentic self. I’ve been endlessly inspired by so many in the trans community. Thank you for your courage, your generosity and ceaselessly working to make this world a more inclusive and compassionate place. I will offer whatever support I can and continue to strive for a more loving and equal society.”

Page currently stars as Vanya Hargreeves in Netflix’s The Umbrella Academy. The actor’s breakthrough role came in 2007, when he starred as the lead in the Jason-Reitman-directed, Diablo-Cody-written Juno.

In his Instagram post, Page asked for patience, adding: “My joy is real, but it is also fragile. The truth is, despite feeling profoundly happy right now and knowing how much privilege I carry, I am also scared. I’m scared of the invasiveness, the hate, the ‘jokes’, and of violence.”

The Umbrella Academy’s Twitter account shared a message of support, writing: “So proud of our superhero! WE LOVE YOU ELLIOT!!!”
