From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Piers Morgan mock-apologised to Elizabeth Hurley for calling her “thirsty” and suggesting that her son took a near-topless photo she shared on social media.

Morgan initially told Hurley to “put [her] clothes on” while appearing on Good Morning Britain on Tuesday (26 January) in response to a picture posted by the model and actor as she posed in a fur coat in the snow.

Returning to the show on Wednesday (27 January), Morgan said that he “wanted to apologise” to Hurley.

“I’m very sorry, I called her thirsty because the moment the snow came out she took all of her clothes off and ran outside and posed topless and then posted it saying, ‘How could I resist?’” Morgan said.

“Well of course, how would an attention-seeking narcissist resist such a moment?”

While the GMB host had initially suggested that the pictures were “creepy” and speculated that Hurley’s teenage son Damian may have taken the photograph, Hurley set the record straight on Tuesday night.

“Far be it for me to suggest the tabloids get their facts muddled, but these pics were in fact taken by my 80-year-old mother,” she tweeted, adding: “Not entirely sure if that puts minds at rest or not.”

Responding to this comment, Morgan continued: “I inadvertently followed the newspaper lead that it was her son Damian, who’d taken these. I think he’s 18, 19 and he’s a photographer who she has regularly said takes all her pictures.”

He then sarcastically commented: “Liz Hurley apparently has an amazing mother who takes brilliant photographs. We’d love to see her photography, I don’t know if she’s got a portfolio because that’s pretty good, that picture.

“How long did you keep your mother in the freezing snow aged 80 to take that picture?... I’m not so sure, do we buy this?”
