From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Finding out who killed Lucy may have been the obvious climax of last night’s EastEnders episodes, but poor old Dot’s arrest also led to a flood of Twitter memes.

Walford’s popular character, played by 88-year-old June Brown, was taken away in a police car on Thursday after confessing to the murder of her son Nick.

Within moments, the #FreeDot campaign was sparked, and here are just a few of the best posts we’ve seen so far:

Elsewhere on EastEnders, celebrating its 30th anniversary with special live shows this week, Lucy’s seemingly cute little brother Bobby Beale was revealed as the murderer.

Tonight the aftermath of Bobby Beale’s crime will be explored in the first entirely live show to round-up the anniversary week.

The year-long mystery surrounding Lucy’s death is the soap’s biggest whodunit for years, following ‘Who killed Archie’ in 2009 and ‘Who shot Phil Mitchell’ in 2001.
