From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Time traveller River Song will meet her husband’s new incarnation, in the form of Peter Capaldi, for the first time this Christmas.

Alex Kingston will return to play River Song in the Doctor Who Christmas special, the BBC has confirmed.

The character made her first Doctor Who appearance in 2008 and has starred in 15 episodes since.

Kingston said she didn’t know whether River would ever return to Doctor Who, but has enjoyed filming the episode alongside Capaldi.

“I met Peter for the first time at Monday’s read through, we had a laugh, and I am now excited and ready to start filming with him and the Doctor Who team. Christmas in September?, why not!”, she said.

Steven Moffat teased what fans may expect to see from the “most complicated relationship in the universe”.

“The last time the Doctor saw her she was a ghost. The first time he met her, she died. So how can he be seeing her again? As ever, with the most complicated relationship in the universe, it’s a matter of time …”, he said.

Other guest stars joining Kingston and Capaldi for the Christmas special will be announced in the coming months.

Doctor Who will return to BBC One on Saturday 19 September, followed by a Christmas special on Friday 25 December.
