From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Award-winning illusionist Derren Brown is returning to Channel 4 this summer with a new live stunt.

20 Years of Mind Control: Live will see Brown perform a newly devised trick on an unsuspecting member of the audience. The two-hour-long special will also re-visit some of the most audacious stunts he has enacted over the past two decades.

Immediately following the broadcast, Brown will also introduce the UK’s favourite Derren Brown special, which will be voted upon by viewers.

Some of Brown’s stunts have caused controversies in the past.

These include his Russian Roulette special in 2003, in which the performer seemingly risked firing a live round into his own head, and The Heist, in which Brown seemed to subconsciously manipulate a group of law-abiding civilians into robbing a security van in broad daylight.

While Brown is unlikely to reveal the full extent of his secrets, the new Channel 4 special will see the performer delve into some of the “incredible stories” and “meticulous logistics” behind his most popular gambits.

In a statement, he said: “Twenty years! That was quick. And what a treat to be given this night by the broadcaster that have been so very supportive and nurturing over that time,” said Brown in a statement.

“I can’t imagine two decades with anyone else. It’s going to be a fun night.”
