Cruel Intentions is returning with a sequel TV series

It's being developed by the original director

Cruel Intentions, the 1999 teen drama that became a cult hit thanks to its dark edge, is returning as a TV series on NBC.

Set in the present day, the new Cruel Intentions 'follows the rags-to-riches story of 16-year-old Bash Casey, the son of the late Sebastian Valmont (played by Ryan Phillippe) and Annette Hargrove (Reese Witherspoon),” Deadline reports.

‘Upon finding his late father’s journal, Bash learns of the family legacy he didn’t know existed. In search of answers, he trades his small-town Kansas upbringing for a scholarship to the prestigious Brighton Preparatory Academy in San Francisco and soon finds himself in a world of sex, money, power, and corruption he never could have imagined.’

Roger Kumble, who adapted the original film from Choderlos de Laclos’ novel Les Liaisons Dangereuses, will write and direct.

The producers of The Unauthorized Musical Parody Of Cruel Intentions are also on board, their stage show having previously had the blessing of Kumble and seen Witherspoon attend a performance along with original co-stars Sarah Michelle Gellar and Selma Blair.

A few movies of this era also have TV spin-offs in the works at the minute, including The Notebook and Training Day.
