Your support helps us to tell the story
From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.
At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.
Your support makes all the difference. The 25th annual Criticsâ Choice Awards gala took place on Sunday night (13 January), with Quentin Tarantinoâs Once Upon a Time in Hollywood taking home the biggest prize, for Best Picture.
The film scooped a further three awards, including Best Supporting Actor for Brad Pitt, Best Original Screenplay for Tarantino, and Best Production Design for Barbara Ling and Nancy Haigh.
The ceremony, which was hosted by Taye Diggs, also saw a number of accolades go to HBO and Netflix, with Martin Scorseseâs The Irishman and Noah Baumbachâs Marriage Story both receiving some of the top awards.
Meanwhile, Fleabag continued to dominate the TV categories, winning Best Comedy Series, Best Actress in a Comedy Series for Phoebe Waller-Bridge, and Best Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series for Andrew Scott, who played the âhot priestâ.
Sam Mendes tied for Best Director with Bong Joon-ho, for their films 1917 and Parasite. Joaquin Phoenix continued his awards success with a Best Actor nod, as did Renee Zellweger, who won Best Actress for her performance in Judy.
In his speech, Phoenix thanked his mother for being his âgreatest inspirationâ.
âI need to thank my mum,â he began. âMum, youâve always been my greatest inspiration, even when self-pity led me astray. Youâve never given up on me and I deeply appreciate your support.â
