Police told the publication that La Barrie was out driving in a McLaren sports car with Ink Master star Daniel Silva in the evening of Sunday 10 May.
The pair “somehow crashed into a street sign and tree… the passenger took the brunt of the hit”. Police did not confirm who was driving the car.
Both men were taken to a Los Angeles hospital, however, La Barrie’s mother Lissa Burton said in an Instagram post that he died at the scene. Silva has reportedly been treated for a hip fracture.
“My heart breaks right now,” she wrote. ”The accident killed him instantly. No words can describe the sadness I feel in losing a child. It just feels so unreal and I’m overwhelmed with grief. I love you so much Corey and will miss you so so much. It’s just so unfair.”
La Barrie’s brother, Jarad, shared a similar post and said: “This is the hardest thing I’ve ever had to do i dont how I’m suppose to do this without you [sic].”
He continued: “I miss you so much already this isn’t fair thank you for always being the best big brother i could ask for i love you so f***ing much life’s never gonna be the same without you RIP.”
La Barrie was part of a popular YouTube duo with Crawford Collins. The pair had more than 104,000 subscribers on their channel, while La Barrie also worked as a solo YouTube entertainer, with 335,000 subscibers.
US media reports that police are currently investigating the cause of the car crash.
Fans and fellow YouTube stars paid tribute on social media. Brennan Taylor wrote: “My heart is so heavy right now. Corey was such a happy go lucky guy can’t believe how fast life can change. Prayers for his family, loved ones, and his fans. I am devastated. I’ll remember the laughs forever. Please cherish everyday because everyday is not promised.”
Singer Rebecca Black tweeted: “Oh god...this makes me incredibly sad. Corey La Barrie was always kind and knew how to lift people up. always brightened my day when I saw him. his friends really loved him so much, and i am so sorry to them, his family, and his supporters.”
