From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. Carol Burnett has been granted temporary custody of her teenage grandson by a Los Angeles Court.

On Tuesday (1 September) a judge granted the 87-year-old Burnett and her husband, Brian Miller, custody of her 14-year-old grandson Dylan West until 8 January 2021.

The move comes two weeks after Burnett and Miller had filed for custody, saying that her daughter, Erin Hamilton, had been struggling with addiction issues.

Burnett said she decided to fight for custody in the interest of West’s "health, education and welfare” and that she does not intend “to deny him nor the parents proper visitation with one another”.

The judge's ruling says Burnett and Miller may change Dylan's home and school at least until a hearing in January.

Hamilton, a singer, is the youngest of the TV comedy legend's three daughters. Burnett has been married to Miller, a musician, since 2001.

An email seeking comment sent to a representative for Hamilton was not immediately returned.
