Hollywood star Adam Sandler has paid tribute to his former co-star Cameron Boyce, who died at the age of 20 following a seizure related to an unknown medical condition.

The actor and filmmaker expressed his shock and sadness at the news, calling Boyce “the nicest, most talented, and most decent kid around”.

Among the former Disney Channel’s star best known roles was comedy films Grown Ups and Grown Ups 2, where he played the son of Sandler’s character Lenny.

“Too young. Too sweet. Too funny. Just the nicest, most talented, and most decent kid around,” said Sandler in a statement posted on Twitter. “Loved that kid. Cared so much about his family. Cared so much about the world. Thank you, Cameron, for all you gave to us.”

He added: “So much more was on the way. All our hearts are broken. Thinking of your amazing family and sending our deepest condolences.”

The actor’s death was confirmed by his family. The cause of death was announced as due to “an ongoing medical condition”.

“It is with a profoundly heavy heart that we report that this morning we lost Cameron,” a spokesperson said on behalf of the Boyce family.

“He passed away in his sleep due to a seizure which was a result of an ongoing medical condition for which he was being treated. The world is now undoubtedly without one of its brightest lights, but his spirit will live on through the kindness and compassion of all who knew and loved him.”

Fans and fellow performers paid tribute to Boyce.

Musician Hozier said the actor was “taken aback by his energy and drive, his dedication to his craft and the sheer kindness he exuded”, while YouTube star James Charles called him “one of the kindest people I’ve ever met”.

A Disney Channel spokesperson said: “He was an incredibly talented performer, a remarkably caring and thoughtful person and, above all else, he was a loving and dedicated son, brother, grandson and friend. We offer our deepest condolences to his family, cast mates and colleagues and join his many millions of fans in grieving his untimely passing. He will be dearly missed.”

Known for his roles in Descendants and the TV show Jessie, Boyce was set to appear as a series regular in HBO’s new show Mrs Fletcher, as well as a TV spinoff of the film American Satan – called Paradise City – about rock stars trying to navigate the music business.
