Acclaimed sitcom Brooklyn Nine-Nine has been renewed for an eighth season by NBC, prompting a frenzied reaction online.

The Golden Globe-winning show, which centres around a fictional police department in New York, stars former SNL cast member Andy Samberg, Andre Braugher, Stephanie Beatriz, Terry Crews and Melissa Fumero.

Brooklyn Nine-Nine is currently in its sixth season, with the seventh due to premiere next February, as Variety reports.

The show’s official Twitter account wrote: “Good things come to those who w8. The #Brooklyn99 squad will be coming back for Season 8 on NBC!”

Although B99 was dropped by Fox last year due to relatively low ratings, it has won widespread praise for its diverse cast and handling of serious issues such as police violence and racism.

It was promptly picked up by NBC following an uproar from fans. At the time, NBC executives Lisa Katz and Tracey Pakosta said: “It’s been one of our great joys as a network to give Brooklyn Nine-Nine a second life.”

Joe Lo Truglio, who plays Charles Boyle, said in a video posted on Twitter: “We’re very excited to be coming back for you guys. We can’t wait to get back here, thank you guys.”

Beatriz, who portrays Rosa Diaz, said the renewal was a “dream come true” while Crews wrote: “Guess what?! We’re coming back for SEASON 8!!”

The release date and episode count for season eight has yet to be announced.

UK viewers can watch the show on E4 and Netflix.
