Where HBO specials were once the pinnacle of televised stand-up shows, Netflix has taken over, buying performances by Dave Chapelle, Chelsea Peretti, and Chris Rock.
Billy Eichner now joins their ranks, the streaming service having purchased his first ever stand-up special.
“I'm coming out of retirement!” the comedian wrote on Twitter. “Beyond excited to announce I'll be doing my first special for Netflix. (Which could include some brand new Billy on the Street....) More info soon.”
Best know for the Emmy-nominated show Billy on the Street, The Hollywood Reporter says the special has been described as “a unique blend of comedy and music that will cover politics, pop culture and may also include some brand-new editions of his signature, Emmy-nominated Billy on the Street segments.”
Netflix has not announced when we can expect the special to film, though the publication says they expect to produce the show this year. Other comedians with upcoming Netflix stand-up specials include Ricky Gervais, Jerry Seinfeld, and Amy Schumer.
