From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

While Benedict Cumberbatch may have starred in various Hollywood blockbusters, the actor remains hasn’t forgotten those BBC roots.

Sure, a fifth season of Sherlock may be years away, but that’s because getting both Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman’s schedules to match has become almost impossible.

Instead, Cumberbatch will soon return to the BBC for the chilling drama The Child in Time, an adaptation of Ian McEwan’s 1987 novel of the same name.

The story focuses on how Stephen and wife Julie — played by Kelly Macdonald — coping with grief after their daughter is abducted. The BBC has since released a chilling 40-second trailer for the drama. Watch above.

The Doctor Strange and Star Trek actor also acts as producer, marking the first drama to be made under his production company SunnyMarch TV.

“I read the novel years ago and it stayed with me – profound, beautiful and very moving,” Cumberbatch previously said. “Only Ian McEwan could write about loss with such telling honesty.”

Directed by Ballers’ Julian Farino and written for screen by The Last Kingdom’s Stephen Butchard, The Child in Time comes to BBC One soon.
