Elba earned a nod for his performance as DCI John Luther in BBC series Luther, with Rylance and his co-star Claire Foy nominated for their roles in Wolf Hall, which leads the field with four nominations
Elsewhere, The Great British Bake Off received its fifth consecutive nomination in the features category while singer Adele is in the running for the first time for TV special Adele at the BBC, where she performed songs from her new album 25 and discussed her career and comeback with host Graham Norton.
The ceremony will be held at London’s Royal Festival Hall on Sunday 8 May.
