The penultimate episode of Game of Thrones included a battle scene that fans have been awaiting for years.
*Major spoilers follow – you have been warned*
As teased in last week’s instalment, The Hound – real name: Sandor Clegane – and Arya Stark returned to King’s Landing to settle their respective scores. Arya wanted to tick Cersei Lannister off of her kill list once and for all, while Clegane wanted to kill his brother and arch nemesis, The Mountain
The latter has been speculated about since season one, when the pair first sparred during a tournament meant to celebrate Ned Stark’s appointment as Hand of the King. That fight was broken up by King Robert Baratheon. Since then, fans have been desperate to see Cleganebowl take place.
However, The Mountain – after being poisoned by Oberyn Martell in season four - is brought back to life by Qyburn and becomes a member of Cersei’s Kingsguard. Ever since his resurrection in season five, though, The Mountain has his face covered with a helmet – until now.
The Mountain unmasks to battle his brother – a fight that ends with them plummeting from the Red Keep to their deaths. Twitter users had the same reaction, though: that The Mountain bears striking resemblance... to Lord Varys.
The Clegane brothers weren't the only ones to die. Among the episodes many casualties was Varys himself, the actor of whom has spoken candidly about his disappointment with being sidelined in the past few seasons of the series.
