From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Confirmation that Hamilton is a miracle of Broadway: Lin-Manuel Miranda's sensational musical has landed a record-breaking 16 nominations at the 2016 Tony Awards.

This beats The Producers and Billy Elliot, who both scored 15 nominations back in 2001 and 2009, respectively; furthermore, making it as pretty much guaranteed to win best musical as Leonardo DiCaprio was bound to win the Oscar. It will also have a fairly strong chance of overcoming The Producers' record of 12 wins.

The diversely-cast production, which retells the history of US founding father Alexander Hamilton, leads a year in which the Tonys have boasted strong representation by Black, Hispanic, and Asian performers in its nominating categories; making the awards ceremony a refreshing break from the #OscarsSoWhite disappointments.

That includes Shuffle Along, Or the Making of the Musical Sensation of 1921 and All That Followed, which nabbed an impressive 10 nominations, retelling the story of 1921's smash jazz-musical which saw Josephine Baker, Paul Robeson, and Florence Mills once grace its stage.
