If, as Tolstoy remarked, all happy families are alike, then the cheeriest of us must be like theatreland's uberMister and Mrs: Timothy West and Prunella Scales (right). Their latest joint venture is Pinter's magnificent debut play, The Birthday Party, which begins a tour this week at Salisbury Playhouse. Interestingly, although Scales is playing one half of the central couple that runs the seaside boarding-house, West is not playing her stage husband. He plays the malevolent Goldberg, the unexpected visitor who turns everyone's lives upside-down.
