The Sunday Preview: Rock
David Byrne (Edinburgh Playhouse, 031-557 2590, Tues; Sheffield City Hall, 0742-735295, Weds; Manchester Apollo, 061-236 9922, Thurs; Nottingham Royal 0626-482525, Sat). First post-Talking Heads tour for the post- just-about-everything pop polymath.
Pavement (Norwich Waterfront, 0603- 766266, tomorrow; Brighton Zap, 0273-775987, Tues; London ULU, 071- 323 5481 Weds). Swift return for compellingly weird US guitar outfit, whose fine new single 'Trigger Cut' will inspire widespread nostalgia, if only
because the 7in version (remember them?) costs a mere 99p.
FURTHER AHEAD
Under the appropriately stirring banner 'The Magnificent Seven Ride Again', Madness, the best British pop group of the video era, come together again for one weekend only in Finsbury Park, 8-9 Aug. With support, as if any were needed, from Morrissey, who has something to prove after his no-show at Glastonbury, fellow reformees Ian Dury and the Blockheads and junior Camden scallywags Flowered Up. The Saturday is sold out, but some tickets are left for the Sunday ( pounds 20; details 081-963 0797).
