Your support helps us to tell the story

From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Your support makes all the difference.

What Is It?

The list of artists featured in The Shape of the Century, part of the Salisbury Festival, reads like a Who's Who of 20th-century sculpture. Henri Gaudier-Brzeska and Eric Gill through Henry Moore (right) and Barbara Hepworth, to contemporary artists such as Stephen Cox and Rachel Whiteread, are all represented in this refreshingly informal survey of the past 100 years. Curated by Annette Ratuszniak, the 86 sculptures, by 54 artists turn up all around the city - in the Cathedral, the library, the New Arts Centre, in pedestrian precincts and office entrances.

What They Say About It

"A certain failure to pick up ideas and follow them through, accounts for the piecemeal nature of the exhibition. It is best regarded as a series of heterogeneous encounters, that play, crucially, on the work of art's dialogue with the site... an ambitious, risk-taking, provocative and highly enjoyable exhibition," Frances Spalding, The Independent.

"This is public sculpture that blends into the natural environment with ease... a great meeting of the spiritual and the secular," Simon Grant, The Guardian.
