A new Star Wars TV series is being developed for Disney+ by the creator of Russian Doll.

The news came on 4 May, aka Star Wars Day – a day of celebration for fans of the franchise across the world.

The official Twitter account for the franchise shared a link to a release revealing that Thor: Ragnarok and Jojo Rabbit director Taika Waititi will direct and co-write a new Star Wars feature film.

“In addition, Emmy-nominated writer Leslye Headland (Russian Doll, Bachelorette) is currently developing a new untitled Star Wars series for Disney+,” the release adds.

Headland will serve as the show’s writer, executive producer, and showrunner.

The programme’s title and release date have yet to be unveiled.

Disney+ is already home to The Mandalorian, a Star Wars live-action series set between Return of the Jedi and The Force Awakens.

The Mandalorian‘s second season is currently in post-production.

Two other Star Wars programmes have been announced by the platform: one focusing on Cassian Andor and starring Diego Luna, and the other telling the story of Obi-Wan Kenobi after Revenge of the Sith and before A New Hope.

Ewan McGregor will reprise his role as the Jedi Master.
