Your support helps us to tell the story

From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Your support makes all the difference.

The actor has just completed filming Game of Thrones series four and recently starred in The Tunnel on Sky Atlantic, which is released on DVD on 13 January. He tells Charlotte Cripps about his current reading, watching and listening ....

Sunday

Finish reading Gargoyles by Thomas Bernhard while in bed. Astounding. In the evening watch Before Midnight on DVD.

Monday

On the train, dip into a book called Lacan for Beginners about the psychoanalyst. Watch some of the BBC’s Blues series on iPlayer.

Tuesday

Listen to an untitled Nick Cave CD that I find in the car. In the afternoon, go to see the Viennese portraits at the National Gallery. A friend shows me a YouTube interactive version of Bob Dylan singing “Like a Rolling Stone”.

Wednesday

Go with 15-year-old son to the official opening of David Attenborough’s 3D film on (and at) the Natural History Museum. Listen to Ry Cooder then Blind Willie Johnson playing “Dark Was the Night” on YouTube.

Thursday

Half-listen to Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau singing Winterreise while avoiding doing tax stuff. In bed, start reading Geoff Dyer’s Zona.

Friday

Do tax stuff while listening to The Velvet Underground and Nico and Django Bates’s Spring is Here (Shall We Dance?).

Saturday

Talk on the phone to potential collaborator about a possible art show in Sydney. On iPlayer, watch BBC4’s documentary on the blues singer Big Bill Broonzy.
