DESPITE SCIENTIFIC endeavours to suppress bacteria, they always seem to stay one step ahead of the game. As quickly as new drugs are invented to combat them, they mutate and develop new strains. But help is at hand in the shape of Carl Merril, a scientist who has studied bacteriophages, viruses that are able to destroy bacteria (right). He talks to Trevor Phillips in The Material World (4.30pm R4).
