Comedy and poetry do not always sit together very happily, but they prove the best of buddies in the performances of John Hegley (above). Looking like a cross between Elvis Costello and a DSS clerk, he relishes nonsense verse about subjects as diverse as his glasses (a particular fixation) and his beloved Luton Town Football Club. He is on a splendid bill, alongside the perpetually caustic Jeremy Hardy and the talented Meera Syal from Goodness Gracious Me, in a benefit for the Joint Council for the Welfare of Immigrants, which is celebrating its 30th anniversary.

Hackney Empire, London E8 (0181-985 2424) tomorrow 7.30pm
