While controversial artist Chris Ofili may not have won the Jerwood Prize last Monday, don't be put off by the seemingly light-hearted nature of his mixed-media artwork, such as The Adoration of Captain Shit and the Legend of the Black Stars (detail, right), which uses, among other materials, elephant dung. Behind the super-decorative swirls of paint and glitter lies a personal attack on the racial and sexual stereotypes that lurk at the base of our society, as his new show at the Serpentine reveals.
Serpentine Gallery, Kensington Gardens, London W2 (0171-402 6075) to 1 Nov
