DELIBERATING OVER photographs may seem odd on the radio, but the detailed descriptions given in Snapshots in the Dark (3.30pm R4, right) are almost as vivid as the real thing. The series begins with Jacob Riis's Police Lodging Rooms, Church Street Station, 1895, a powerful image of a New York slum dwelling where the photographer stayed upon his arrival in the city.
