This election is still a dead heat, according to most polls. In a fight with such wafer-thin margins, we need reporters on the ground talking to the people Trump and Harris are courting. Your support allows us to keep sending journalists to the story.

The Independent is trusted by 27 million Americans from across the entire political spectrum every month. Unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock you out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. But quality journalism must still be paid for.

National Geographic's 2019 Travel Photo contest is drawing to a close after six weeks of pictures from photographers around the world.

The final week's selection of pictures includes rhinos drinking in a thunderstorm and Tower Bridge in the morning light.

“We are looking for images that show us the world: its people, places, and cultures,” the magazine said in a statement. “Photos that tell the story of a place and travel moments that reveal what inspires you.”

Results of the contest will be announced later in the year. The winners will receive a cash prize and their work will be promoted by the publication.

The contest is open until 3 May and you can submit your photographs here.

The Independent has compiled the best pictures from this week's entries.
