Your support helps us to tell the story
From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.
At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.
Your support makes all the difference.Trees soaked in sunlight, a dramatic thunderstorm, a classroom of students in Pakistan and a freediver swimming with moon jellyfish are just a handful of the beautiful images awarded prizes in this year’s Outdoor Photographer of the Year Competition.
The overall winner is not announced until Saturday 13 February but the best photographs from each category have been revealed, and are as stunning as you might expect.
Ben Wayman’s shot of trees dripping with dew in Northumberland won Light On The Land and Naomi Stolow’s creative capturing of an elephant’s trunk in South Africa was deemed the best in the Wildlife Insight group.
Greg Whitton caught the moment two walkers reached the top of Tryfan’s north ridge in Snowdonia and topped the Live The Adventure category, while William Eades took his photo of a thunderstorm in his hometown of Port Macquarie, Australia, and won for At The Water’s Edge.
Henrik Spranz’s close-up of a gossamer-winged butterfly won Small World, George Karbus scooped the prize for his diver in Under Exposed and Andrea Francolini won Spirit of Travel for her picture of a school in northern Pakistan.
More than 12,000 images were entered into the competition, with all winning and commended pieces forming an exhibition at the Outdoor Adventure & Travel Show at London’s ExCeL next month.
The overall winner will be announced live at the Outdoor Adventure & Travel Show at London ExCeL, in the UK, on Saturday 13th February 2016. For more information, visit www.telegraphoutdoorshow.co.uk.
