From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.
At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.
Your support makes all the difference.“Houston, we have a problem”, from the film Apollo 13, is the one Britons like to quote the most out of all the movies ever to have won an Oscar, a survey claims.
A poll of 2,000 adults found the words spoken by Tom Hanks in the 1995 Academy Award-winning film have been used in conversation by 35 per cent of people in the UK.
However, the famous line is different to the words spoken in real life by astronaut Jim Lovell (“Okay, Houston, we’ve had a problem here”) during the real-life space mission in 1970, upon which the movie was based.
Three in 10 of those surveyed said they often use the phrase “There’s no place like home”, spoken by Dorothy in The Wizard of Oz.
And more than a quarter said they regularly say “May the Force be with you”, like the Jedis from the Star Wars films.
Other frequently-quoted lines from Oscar winners include “Show me the money” from the 1996 Tom Cruise film Jerry Maguire and “I’m going to make him an offer he can’t refuse” from The Godfather.
The study was commissioned ahead of Sunday’s Oscars ceremony by Sky Cinema to reveal the impact the prize-winners have on our lives.
Ian Lewis, group director at Sky Cinema, said: “One sign of a truly great classic is winning an Oscar, but another is how much it enters people’s lives and we often see that phrases from great films of generations gone are still used by Brits in everyday life situations.”
According to the survey, one of the most common lines used on dates is “I’ll be back”, spoken by Arnold Schwarzenegger in The Terminator.
And when facing a stressful situation, 13 per cent of those surveyed said they tell themselves to “Just keep swimming” like Dory in Finding Nemo.
The study also found the average British person uses a film quote up to three times a week in their day-to-day life, to entertain themselves and others. And nearly four in 10 said go "all-out" when quoting their favourite films, bringing in accents and physical gestures.
Some 15 per cent said they use film quotes despite having never actually seen the film in question.
To celebrate this year’s awards, Sky Cinema Oscars is showing more than 100 titles to give people the chance to re-watch some of their favourite Oscar winners, or enjoy them for the first time, from now until 3 March.
