Westerman unveils new track 'Jericho' - premiere
Your support helps us to tell the story
From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.
At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.
Your support makes all the difference.London based singer songwriter Westerman has unveiled the stunning single "Jericho".
Influenced by John Martyn, Nick Drake and Neil Young, the 23-year-old's work nods to classic folk along with the more modern sounds of José González, Eaves and C. Duncan.
Westerman will support Chelou at the Waiting Room in London on Tuesday 26 April. Check out the premiere for "Jericho" and let us know what you think:
Q&A with Westerman
What music have you been listening to recently?
I've been trying to listen to a load of seemingly unconnected stuff recently, I think it's very important to keep a really open mind when looking for new bits of inspiration as a writer. Cate Le Bon or Arthur Russell for idiosyncratic structure, Miike Snow for clever and exceptionally taut pop hooks, Frank Ocean for his phrasing and Terry Callier for sheer beauty and to keep me honest. GoGo Penguin are also a current favourite of mine, love the percussion!
What are your plans for summer 2016?
I've written the next record and my friend Nath (Bullion) and I starting to try and put that together. So mostly that I guess. It's hard to put a timeline on things like that as we want it to sound as good as it can.
Beyond that there's another track to come off this current EP, and I'll be trying to get out and play this body of work to as many people as possible. Summer is so soon now, I love it!
What was the first gig you ever played, and what's been the best so far?
My first gig was at a school talent show, I played a song I'd written about a man awaiting execution for having killed his wife's lover - A cheerful number!
I always like to think that the next one will be the best, but I really enjoyed playing a few gigs in The Ruhr out in Germany a while back. They really take care of you and the beer is dangerously good!
Westerman’s debut EP Havard will be released this summer
