The Unthanks' Songs from the Shipyards originated in their soundtrack work for a documentary film elegiacally celebrating the lost shipbuilding industry in 20th-century poems and folksongs. Hence, the wistful blend of piano and ambient sounds underscoring the album centrepiece "The Romantic Tees". Elsewhere, Becky Unthank's soft timbre and her sister Rachel's more ingenuous tone lend a fond nobility to shipbuilding reminiscences such as "Black Trade" and "A Great Northern River".
