Your support makes all the difference.Viola/piano duo Kim Kashkashian and Robert Levin's disc of Spanish and Argentinian song transcriptions demands little from the listener, yet allows for as much attention as he or she might want to give it. This could be classy background music, even a melancholy film-score, then you notice they have included Ginastera's "Triste" and de Falla's "Asturiana" (from Seven Popular Spanish Songs) twice, and realise just how much thought both performers have put into conveying meaning and poetry in these apparently naive melodies. Kashkashian has never sounded darker or sweeter or more ambiguous.
