Iggy's last album, Avenue B, was a sombre affair, full of downbeat meditations on old age and mortality. Fans of unashamed rock'n'roll kicks will be thrilled to learn that Beat 'Em Up is a return to Raw Power mode, as though Iggy followed the "I'm going to die" realisation to its logical conclusion: he might as well enjoy himself while he can. The title and sleeve leave you in little doubt as to what you're getting: primal, howling vocals, metallic guitars and pounding swamp rock percussion. However, there's nothing here to justify not investigating Iggy's pre-1980 oeuvre first.
