Album: Various artists, Listen, Whitey! The Sounds of Black Power 1967-74 (Light In The Attic)

This fascinating compilation mixes songs and spoken-word pieces from black and white sources.

The results can be more interesting than listenable – and the musical contents do seem wilfully random. But there's Marlena Shaw and Gil Scott-Heron and everyone needs to hear Dylan's "George Jackson", a 1971 single for which he returned to his folk-protest style of a decade earlier. Roy Harper's "I Hate the White Man" and John and Yoko's "Angela" remain curious period pieces.
