Mercifully, London quartet Scanners only occasionally sound like a broken Lexmark. The rest of the time, they sound like a lot of other people you probably already quite like. Which is both their prime virtue and their fatal vice. Close your eyes when you're listening to "Air 164", and it could be the Yeah Yeah Yeahs before they went off the boil. "High Flyer" sounds like a Dresden Dolls work in progress and "Look What You Started" could be the Pretenders in a sombre mood. In fact, 'Violence Is Golden' has the feel of a female-fronted rock compilation, and quite a cool one. But if you wanted that, you could burn your own.
