Your support helps us to tell the story
From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.
At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.
Your support makes all the difference. It’s been just a few hours since Kanye West announced his presidential run at that bastion of serious political debate, the MTV Video Music Awards, but supporters (and savvy e-sellers) are already rallying behind him.
A plethora of Kanye 2020 t-shirts have already been designed and made available for sale on eBay, with baseball caps surely to follow.
I don’t know what I finna lose after this,” Kanye said during a lengthy speech at the ceremony. “It don’t matter though, because it’s not about me. It’s about ideas, bro, new ideas, people with ideas, people who believe in truth. And yes, as you probably could have guessed by this moment, I have decided in 2020, to run for president.”
His political plans are slightly more ambitious than that of his peer Kendrick Lamar, who previously rapped “I should probably run for mayor [of Compton] when I’m done to be honest” on his track King Kunta.
Whether Kanye is serious about his presidential run remains to be seen, given how frequently he changes his mind about things, but it’s not such an unrealistic prospect given Arnold Schwarzenegger served as Governor of California and Donald Trump is a serious candidate for Republican presidential nominee.
