From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.
At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. Your support makes all the difference.A posthumous collaboration between rappers XXXTentacion and Lil Peep was released Wednesday, months after the deaths of the two young rappers.
The track, called “Falling Down,” is the first collaboration between the two rappers and was completed after they’d both passed away.
The song was co-written by ILoveMakonnen, who had previously teased the release before writing on Instagram Tuesday: “I posted a few weeks ago about how much it meant to me to know that this song I co-wrote with @lilpeep inspired @xxxtentacion to want to jump on and add some verses.
“Incredibly excited for y’all to hear it tomorrow.”
According to ILoveMakonnen, he and Peep were working on a new album, which they did not get to finish before Peep died of a drug overdose in November at the age of 21.
XXX reportedly heard one of the tracks and recorded his own addition to it - before he was shot and killed in June - at which point his family reached out to Peep’s management to collaborate on the track.
“[X] ended up passing away, and his mom and his family were reaching out to Peep’s management and everybody saying the song was something that [X] was very passionate about before he passed and he would really like to be a part of this and [asked] if we could make this happen. So I was like, ‘Sure.’ That’s what me and Peep were making music for, to bring people together,” ILoveMakonnen told XXL magazine during an interview.
According to ILoveMakonnen, it was the wish of both rappers’ mothers to make the song a reality - and he hopes that it brings “some closure to everybody with some healing.”
At the time of their deaths, both rappers were working on upcoming projects.
An album from Peep will be released in the coming months by Columbia, according to Variety, and unreleased music from XXX will also be released as part of a deal the rapper had signed with Empire, according to the New York Times.
